What is
Inflow & Infiltration?

Inflow & Infiltration (I&I) occurs when groundwater or stormwater that does not need to be treated enters the sanitary sewer system through cracks, defects, or improper connections. Excess I&I reduces system capacity, increases treatment costs, and raises the risk of flooding and overflows, placing additional strain on wastewater treatment facilities.

To calculate how much I&I is entering the system, engineers use flow monitoring, which measures wastewater movement over time and compares it to expected baseline conditions. This data helps quantify the volume of extraneous water, pinpoint areas where I&I is most significant, and identify when and where sewer maintenance is needed.
